About Underwater Acoustic Modem
A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates one or more wave signals to encode digital information for transmission. It demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. The objective is to generate a signal that can be transmitted and decoded easily to reproduce the original data. Modems are used with any means of transmitting analog signals, from RF to microwaves to LEDs. A common type of modem is one that modulates the digital data of a computer to produce electrical signals for transmission through telephone lines. The signals are demodulated by another modem at the receiver side to recover the original digital data.
Underwater acoustic modems are used to transmit data wirelessly in water or marine surroundings. With the use of underwater modems, consumers can monitor, navigate, and communicate under water. The use of technologies, such as GPS and Wi-Fi, beneath the water surface has been made possible through the introduction of underwater modems, which are better known as acoustic modems.
